Research Areas Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the most prevalent disease in the world. 50.8 milion diabetics out of the World’s 285 milion diabetics, are in India, according to the figures released by International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in October 2009. According to a study conducted by Dr Anoop Misra and his team, Delhi alone has an estimated 29.8 lakh people suffering from this disease(Indo-US collaborative study). Another study conducted by same team, revealed that 37% of urban South Asian Indians suffer from Diabetes and pre-Diabetes. This rise in type 2 diabetes is mostly evident in urban areas where rapid economic development has led people to adapt a sedentary lifestyle and consume more refined foods. However, rural communities are also showing an increasing trend towards diabetes due to commercialization of villages by market forces.
